She then begins traveling with them, bonding with his son Al and even Doc himself. Later Doc sees how talented Sonora is with horses and decides to give her a job as a stable hand. Sonora then informs Doc Carver, Maries employer, that she is his new diving girl, and Doc tells her she is too young. Sonora ends up at a county fair and sees a performance by Marie, a diving girl, as she jumps onto a horse as it runs up a steep platform just before it leaps off into a pool of water. Instead, Sonora slips out of the house during the night. Sonora learns that because of the familys financial difficulties, her treasured horse Lightning will be sold and she will be placed in an orphanage. Sonora Webster is an orphan living with her aunt during the Great Depression. On the brink of stardom, however, a cruel twist of fate threatens to destroy her dream. Undaunted, Sonora's gutsy resolve finally convinces him to give her a break. Her great wish is to become a death-defying "diving girl," but Doc refuses her pleas. Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken is a 1991 film about Sonora Webster Carver, a rider of diving horses and is based on events in her life as told in her memoir A Girl and Five Brave Horses.Ī runaway orphan, young Sonora, persists in a menial job mucking stables in Doc Carver's travelling stunt show. Her life looks complete now that she and Al are in love, but Sonora is about to be thrust into a very trying chapter of her life. An injury to star rider Marie (Kathleen York) paves her way, and Sonora finds herself on the diving platform. With the help of Al Carver ( Michael Schoeffling), whose father runs the show, Sonora works toward her goal.
